6 July 2005

A HUNGER striker facing deportation back to Zimbabwe won a last-minute reprieve yesterday as he waited to board a plane at the airport.

A HUNGER striker facing deportation back to Zimbabwe won a last-minute reprieve yesterday as he waited to board a plane at the airport.

Absolom Mashamba, 34, who was on his 14th day without food, was told he was leaving on the 7.45pm British Airways flight to Harare.

But just before 6pm, his solicitor Jovanka Savic was told the deportation had been halted. Ms Savic said: “We had lodged proceedings at the High Court.”

It is the second time in four days that a deportation to Zimbabwe has been blocked through the courts.
